The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI, also called the Services PMI, is a monthly diffusion index compiled by the Institute for Supply Management from a survey of purchasing and supply executives across the US services sector, covering industries including finance, healthcare, retail and construction, which together account for the large majority of US economic output and employment. Introduced in 1998 to complement the older Manufacturing PMI, it uses the same above/below-50 expansion/contraction threshold and composite methodology, and because services make up such a dominant share of the modern US economy, it is regarded by many economists as an equally or more important gauge of overall economic direction than its manufacturing counterpart.
