GDP per capita divides a country's gross domestic product by its total population, producing a rough measure of average economic output and living standard per person that allows more meaningful comparison across countries of very different population sizes than raw GDP totals alone. Commonly reported both in nominal terms and adjusted for purchasing power parity to account for differences in local price levels, GDP per capita is calculated and published by national statistical agencies and compiled internationally by bodies such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and it remains one of the standard, if imperfect, cross-country benchmarks of relative prosperity, since it says nothing directly about the distribution of income within a country.
