Existing home sales measure the number of previously constructed single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops that were sold and closed in a given month, published monthly by the National Association of Realtors from data compiled through local multiple listing services and other data sources across the United States. Because resales make up roughly 90 percent of the US housing market by volume, far outweighing new-home sales, the figure is a primary gauge of overall housing-market health, and it is reported alongside a median sales price and months' supply of inventory that are themselves closely watched affordability and tightness signals.
