The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, first published in 1936, is the founding text of Keynesian economics. John Maynard Keynes argued that total spending in an economy can settle at a level too low to employ everyone willing to work, and that government action can be used to raise demand and reduce unemployment during a downturn.
