SIX Swiss Exchange, based in Zurich, is Switzerland's principal stock exchange, formed in 1993 through the merger of the country's three regional exchanges in Geneva, Basel, and Zurich, whose own histories stretched back to 1850, 1866, and 1873 respectively. In 1995 it became the first stock exchange in the world to run a fully automated trading, clearing, and settlement system, and by 2018 the market capitalization of companies listed on it had reached 1.6 trillion Swiss francs; it is wholly owned by SIX Group, itself held by roughly 120 Swiss and foreign financial institutions.
