The National Bank of Ukraine, headquartered in Kyiv, was established in 1991 out of the Ukrainian branch of the Soviet Gosbank when Ukraine gained independence. It is responsible for the stability of the Ukrainian hryvnia, developing monetary policy together with the government, regulating and supervising the country's commercial banks and credit organizations, managing Ukraine's gold and foreign currency reserves, and overseeing interbank settlements, and with more than twelve thousand employees it is one of the largest employers in Ukraine's financial sector.
