The Muscovy Company, also known as the Russia Company, was an English trading company chartered by Mary I of England on February 6, 1555, founded by Richard Chancellor, Sebastian Cabot and Sir Hugh Willoughby as a successor to the 1551 Company of Merchant Adventurers to New Lands. Described as the first major English chartered joint-stock company, it held a monopoly on trade between England and the Tsardom of Russia until 1698 and continued trading for centuries afterward before reconstituting itself as a charitable organization active in Russia after the 1917 revolution.
