Moody's Investors Service traces to John Moody's 1909 publication rating railroad bonds, the first systematic bond credit ratings; Moody incorporated the business the following year as Moody's Investors Service. It is one of the Big Three credit rating agencies, alongside Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings, publishing international financial research and issuing credit ratings on bonds and debt securities issued by companies and governments, ratings whose downgrades or warnings are widely treated by investors as authoritative signals of default risk.
