The Hungarian National Bank, known as the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, is Hungary's central bank, established on June 24, 1924 as successor to the Austro-Hungarian Bank following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy after the First World War. Headquartered on Liberty Square in Budapest, it participates in the European System of Central Banks, and its core objectives are maintaining price stability and managing the Hungarian forint through control of money circulation, the central bank base rate, official exchange rates, and the country's foreign-exchange and gold reserves; it also holds a controlling stake in the Budapest Stock Exchange.
