HM Treasury is the United Kingdom's economic and finance ministry, responsible for public spending and economic policy. Its office grew gradually out of the medieval Exchequer, which was a fully fledged administrative institution based in Westminster by 1154, rather than being founded on a single date; the modern department directs the Bank of England's remit, sets fiscal policy and, alongside the Bank of England, led the United Kingdom's response to the 2008 financial crisis and the European debt crisis.
