The Group of Eight, known as the G8, was an intergovernmental political forum that operated from 1997 to 2014, formed when Russia was incorporated into what had been the Group of Seven. The G7 itself traced back to a 1975 summit hosted by France bringing together six major economies, joined by Canada in 1976, and Russia's formal inclusion followed in 1998. On March 24, 2014, the other members suspended Russia's participation over its annexation of Crimea, reverting the forum to its G7 format, and Russia announced on January 13, 2017 that it would permanently leave the grouping, ending the G8 in practice.
