The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, known as BaFin, is Germany's unified financial regulator, formed on May 1, 2002 and operating as an autonomous federal institution under the oversight of the Federal Ministry of Finance, with offices in Bonn and Frankfurt am Main. It supervises the safety and soundness of the German financial system, overseeing approximately 2,700 banks, 800 financial services firms, and more than 700 insurance companies, and employed just under 3,000 staff at the end of 2024.
