The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic was established on May 28, 1935 through a set of Congressional acts, replacing the currency-board system Argentina had operated since 1899, with its charter drafted by the economist Raul Prebisch drawing on a 1933 Bank of England study. Originally a private institution with majority British ownership, it was nationalized by Juan Peron on March 24, 1946 to recover reserves that had been held in escrow at the Bank of England. Headquartered in Buenos Aires, the bank today is a fully state-owned institution charged with promoting monetary and financial stability, employment, and economic development, managing Argentina's peso and foreign reserves, though it remains subordinate to the country's Economy Ministry on questions of policy.
