The Bank of Uganda was established on August 16, 1966, succeeding the East African Currency Board. Headquartered in Kampala, it manages the Ugandan shilling and conducts the country's monetary policy; it is wholly owned by the government but is not a government department, and its board of directors serves as the supreme policy-making body responsible for its general management and for ensuring its statutory obligations are met.
