The Bank of Ghana, formally established on March 4, 1957, is Ghana's central bank, tracing its origins to the Bank of the Gold Coast and the Ghana Commercial Bank, institutions that had carried out central-banking functions before independence. Headquartered in Accra, it formulates and implements monetary policy, issues and redeems the country's currency notes and coins, regulates and supervises the banking and credit system, acts as banker and financial adviser to the government, and manages Ghana's external financial relations with international banking institutions.
