Steven N. S. Cheung, born in Hong Kong in 1935, is an economist known for his work on property rights and transaction costs within the new institutional economics associated with his teachers Armen Alchian and Ronald Coase. His 1969 study The Theory of Share Tenancy used transaction cost reasoning to explain agricultural contracts that had often been dismissed as inefficient, and his 1982 study Will China Go Capitalist? anticipated market-oriented reform in China. He taught at the University of Washington from 1969 to 1982 and the University of Hong Kong from 1982 to 2000, and is credited as one of the first scholars to introduce Chicago School price theory to Chinese-language economics audiences.
