Paul Volcker (September 5, 1927 to December 8, 2019) was an American economist and central banker who served as the twelfth chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987. During his tenure he was widely credited with ending the high inflation that had persisted through the 1970s and into the early 1980s, through the sustained tightening of monetary policy known as the Volcker Disinflation.
