Kaushik Basu, born in Kolkata in 1952, is an Indian economist who served as Chief Economic Advisor to the government of India from 2009 to 2012 and as Chief Economist of the World Bank from 2012 to 2016. His research spans development economics, game theory, industrial organization and the economics of child labor, and he is credited with formulating the traveler's dilemma in game theory. He holds a professorship in international studies and economics at Cornell University and served as president of the International Economic Association from 2017.
