Joseph Stiglitz (born 1943) is an American economist. He won the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, shared with George Akerlof and Michael Spence, for analysis of markets with asymmetric information. He served as chief economist of the World Bank and chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and is a prominent critic of financial deregulation and of globalization's unequal effects.
