Claudia Goldin, born in the Bronx, New York, in 1946, is an American economic historian and labor economist at Harvard University. She received the 2023 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, becoming the third woman and the first to win it alone, for research advancing understanding of women's labor market outcomes across American history. Her work traces the effect of access to contraception on women's career choices, the persistence of gender wage gaps, and how education and technological change have shaped labor market inequality between men and women. In 1990 she became the first woman granted tenure in Harvard's economics department, and she served as president of the American Economic Association in 2013.
